Carter, a carpenter with a mysterious past steps into unknown territory when accepting a job From an old high school classmate, Cassie. Cassie is currently overseeing the recovery of her older sister, Hannah, who was beaten and left to die in a ditch, a random act of violence that has now created a surreal scene of sibling rivalry for Carter, who although flattered by the attention, knows trouble when he sees it. Both women harbor resentment towards how each other dealt with the recent passing of their mother. As Hannah physically improves, so does her competitiveness and interest in Carter, which creates the potential for far more damage to the already fraying fabric of this dysfunctional family.

Leonard is a cantankerous homeless man in his late fifties who shares his space with a mouse- like girl named Francis. Unhurt but trapped, the threesome share imprisonment as well as a few secrets while waiting to be rescued.

Myra, a hard-working temp from Queens, has done the unconscionable-in her brother Ludlow's opinion: she has accepted a date with a dashing young executive in the office where she currently is employed. Not prone to dating because of priorities involving caring for young Ludlow, Myra's decided to take one last swing at romance. For 24 hours, a comedic tug of war rages in their cramped one bedroom apartment. Lud, an aspiring finger painter confined to the apartment because of manic episodes, is determined to destroy the budding relationship that threatens his exclusive hold on his sister's love. Reggie finds he must fight for Myra's affection and ultimately Ludlow discovers that acceptance affords him a measure of dignity.

When he appears, the specter of Death is not far behind. Sarah befriends Joshua, much to the consternation of her neighbors, and the anger of her drunken ex-husband.

Rebellious and aloof, Bobby bristles at the thought of being kept at Walters', but soon find a Friend, and crush, on the beautiful, and very pregnant Diana, a single woman living next door. As the four weeks stretch out into seven, with the disappearance of Amelia shadowing a similar fate of Bobby's long-absent father, Walter and Bobby learn to appreciate each other, despite the life choices and challenges that occur.

Ben's attempts to reassert parental control over Rachel while living in her home, the rivalry between Rachel and Cleo, the battle of wits between Ben and Clayton creates a humorous tug of war in this modern day dramedy.
